The Ingredient Run Down

Trader Joe’s shoppers rejoice, because we have another TJ’s creation.

Non-TJ’s shoppers also rejoice, because you should be able to find all these ingredients or close alternatives in any grocery store.

Take a look at the photo below to get an idea of everything you need.

You’ll have to trust me on the beans. I recently made high protein creamy lasagna soup by blending white beans and ricotta cheese together. It made the soup so creamy, and you’d never know the beans were there.

If you’re a new reader, my taste tester/wife is one of the pickiest eaters you’ll come across. She loved this broth. (But not the cilantro in the wontons. That’s on Joe, though, not me!)

I’ve been wanting to make some form of soup with the mini cilantro chicken wontons from Trader Joe’s but couldn’t decide on a broth. I happened to be making firecracker turkey broth bowls this week and thought the sweet and spicy broth would be a perfect match.

Your Firecracker Fun Has Just Begun

I’ve been making high protein meals with firecracker sauce since 2021. I like to experiment with the sauce each time, trying different sweeteners, chili flakes and powders, and ratios. There’s really no wrong way to do it so feel free experiment.

Firecracker Chicken Wonton Soup

By Mason Woodruff
Turn frozen chicken wontons into a high protein, high fiber soup in 15-20 minutes. Chicken bone broth and homemade firecracker sauce are blended with a sneaky can of white beans to make a creamy soup base for your favorite frozen wontons.
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 10 minutes
Total: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Chicken Bone Broth
  • 1 can (15 oz) Great Northern Beans, or your choice of white beans
  • ¼ cup Buffalo Sauce, I used Trader Joe's
  • ¼ cup Maple Syrup
  • 2 Tablespoons Rice Vinegar
  • 2 Frozen Crushed Garlic Cubes, or 2 cloves fresh
  • 2 Frozen Crushed Ginger Cubes, or 2 teaspoons fresh
  • 1 Tablespoon Paprika
  • 1 bag (12 oz) Frozen Chicken Wontons, I used Trader Joe's Chicken Cilantro Mini Wontons
  • 1 Tablespoon Trader Joe's Crunchy Chili Onion, or any chili crisp (optional)
  • Green Onion and Cilantro, thinly sliced, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  • Add all the ingredients except the wontons and crispy chili onion to a blender or food processor. Blend until completely smooth. (You can also use an immersion blender in the cooking pot.)
  • Transfer to a saucepan or pot over medium-high heat and bring to a boil.
  • Carefully add the frozen wontons to the pot. Cook for 2-3 minutes until heated through. (Or cook according to the packaging on your choice of wontons.)
  • Turn off the heat and stir in the optional tablespoon of crunchy chili onion before serving.
  • Garnish with sliced green onion and/or chopped cilantro, a squeeze of lime juice, and extra crunchy chili onion, if desired.
