3 Protein Mug Cake Recipes: Devil’s Food, Apple Pie, and PB Banana

One of the biggest obstacles to overcome in any weight loss journey or fitness transformation can be sweets. More often than not, any type of dessert is going to be higher in calories and lower in protein. Neither of which add up to weight loss success. That’s why I love making something like a high protein mug cake or other microwaveable treats.

They’re super easy and quick to make, are packed with protein, and taste amazing (super important). The three protein mug cake recipes below are three of my favorites. You won’t need many ingredients, and they can all be made in less than five minutes. What’s not to love?

Before I get to the recipes, I’ll say that all three recipes call for protein powder. You can use any protein powder you like, but I typically use a whey protein and any macros you see in my recipes are calculated with Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey unless otherwise noted.

Apple Pie Protein Mug Cake

All the great apple pie flavor in cake form with 25 grams of protein.

You can find both the sugar-free apple pie filling Pillsbury sugar-free quick bread and muffin mix in the baking aisle at Walmart or here on Amazon. Honestly, I’ve yet to play around with the quick bread mix as much as the regular cake mix you’ll see in the next recipe. But I’m very impressed with how this apple pie protein mug cake turned out.

With any protein mug cake, a perfect pairing is a lower calorie ice cream or fat-free whipped topping. Below you’ll find a graphic taking a look at some of the more popular healthy ice cream options. Just know the higher priced options aren’t required!

Protein Mug Cake with Devil’s Food Sugar-Free Cake Mix

The most popular question for this recipe is about the diet soda. The short explanation is that it acts as a leavening agent and sweetener. It really adds some body and volume to the cake. That being said, you can use any liquid you’d like with this protein mug cake. And if you’re not using a food scale, you just want to fully hydrate the ingredients without making everything runny. Stir well and add liquid slowly.

Chocolate Peanut Butter and Banana Protein Mug Cake (or brownie)

This recipe would be an exception to the macros with Optimum’s protein rule. A friend of mine runs a nutrition supplement company, Never Been Stronger. He was nice enough to send me some of their new protein, which I used to make the recipe below.

If you’re unfamiliar with my recipes, I have a habit of using vanilla protein and adding cocoa powder. I feel it gives recipes a more authentic chocolate flavor. In the recipe below, you’ll notice I added cocoa to a chocolate protein powder. Seriously, if you haven’t tried it, start today.

You can find PB2 powdered peanut butter in most grocery stores these days. But if you’re having trouble finding it, you can pick some up on Amazon here. It’s a high protein, low calorie recipe staple in my house.

I’ve tried all three of these recipes!! They’re all wonderful!! Instead of using peanut butter in the chocolate pb banana mug cake, I used almond butter!! It worked just as well!! Thanks for all the recipe ideas!!!

I love the chocolate variety of this recipe! I really struggle with finding mug cake recipes that don't taste like straight up grainy pumpkin, super bitter cocoa or rubbery protein. This one is absolutely perfect. It was my go to all winter, except I loved it so much I started making the recipe larger and cooking it in the oven. I use cream soda zevia instead of dr. pepper with cookies and cream casein along with lily's dark chocolate chips.

The PB Banana brownie was the first recipe of Mason's that I ever made, and it was really good! The flavor is spot on, and while the texture wasn't really that "gooey brownie" consistency, that's just the nature of the recipe and its ingredients. For those macros, I'm happy to make the sacrifice.
