On December 1, 2017, I posted an article about the strategies I used to grow my Instagram following to over 5,000 people. In the article, I wrote about my overall content and growth strategy. So if you’re looking for tactics, I would definitely read that next. This article will definitely have some practical advice, but its primary focus will be on one key strategy that led to gaining 1,000 Instagram followers—from 9,350 to 10,354—in a single day.
Have no fear, this key strategy doesn’t require paid ads, spamming people, or gaming the algorithm in any way. It does, however, take longer than 24 hours. If you’re hoping to learn how to gain thousands of Instagram followers overnight without putting in the work beforehand, you’re in the wrong place.
Update: One day later, January 24th, and the growth has continued to 11,943 followers. That’s 2,642 followers in roughly 3 days.
First things first, I think it’s important to establish that paying too much attention to the number of followers you have is a bad idea. While a large following or audience can be leveraged in many different ways, there’s no direct correlation between followers and dollars or business success. I would argue that having a small following of a few hundred people that are raving about you is exponentially better than a massive following on a social platform.
Okay, now that we’ve got that disclaimer out there, I’ll say that a following can be a powerful thing. It’s social proof that you have something of value to others. You can drive traffic to your website or business, connect with more potential customers, and use it to connect with other influencers or potential jobs. But I don’t have to tell you this, most of us realize that growing an online presence is valuable. So, let’s get to the top-secret strategy I mentioned above.
The strategy I used to get 1,000 Instagram followers in one day is boring ol’ consistency. The truth is, I didn’t do anything special or different than I wrote about in the article about my first 5,000 Instagram followers. As you can see in the graph below, I’m a data nerd and have tracked audience growth with notes on everything from types of content that did better than others to relationships being made with other influencers. Despite my efforts to optimize everything, growth has been steady, with an average gain of 128 followers every two days.
So how did I go from 128 every two days to 1,000 in one day?
Consistency. I’ll say it again. I’ve posted 3-4 times per day, every single day, since late September. Every comment, message, or email I’ve received, I have responded to. And I still do my best to message new followers to thank them for following and see if there’s anything I can help with. I’ve continued to create infographics, recipes, and refresh old content to keep up with this schedule. This intense regimen of creating and sharing content has led to a rapid improvement of my content.
Okay, so there was something slightly magical that led to gaining 1,000 Instagram followers in a day. The right people finally saw my content. I regularly receive shares and tags in recipe re-creations but if someone doesn’t have a large following, you won’t see massive spikes in traffic or followers. I appreciate the share all the same, but that’s just the fact of the matter.
And by the way, if someone shares your content or tags you in something, respond quickly and genuinely. It’s a big deal.
In the case of my 1,000 follower spike, it started with Sarah sharing a piece of content (a recipe) that she enjoyed, which was then shared by one of her followers, Cristi. Between the two, they have nearly 40,000 followers interested in my niche. In the blink of an eye, I’d gained 1,000 Instagram followers.
If you’re familiar with my content and enjoy it, I think you’ll like their content as well.
Without consistency, this wouldn’t have happened. When I say consistency, it was the slow grind of producing content every single day and gradually improving the quality of the content that led to the growth. If Sarah and Cristi had stumbled across my Instagram a few months ago, there wouldn’t have been anything worth sharing with their audiences. Sure, maybe one or two posts were good, but I can say there wasn’t anything great there.
And that’s the key strategy here. Create content like crazy, provide value, and consistently improve your craft. Over time, more people will notice and eventually, the right people will notice.
It’s a simple strategy that leaves you wanting more, I know, but I challenge you to trust in the process, put your head down to work, and enjoy the journey. Don’t worry about your current numbers. If you’re good, I truly believe the numbers will reflect that sooner than you think.
